Lunuganga Estate

Tucked away beside the Dedduwa Lake, the Lunuganga Estate is a place where time seems to pause — a peaceful, poetic garden that was once the personal retreat of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most influential architect. Over the course of nearly 40 years, Bawa transformed this former rubber estate into a living work of art, blending tropical flora, European design influences, and subtle architectural details into a space of contemplative beauty.

Each vista is carefully framed: a lone Greco-Roman statue on a knoll, a frangipani tree casting shadows across reflecting pools, a minimalist colonnade that opens to sweeping lake views. The garden architecture, infused with Buddhist philosophy and colonial charm, blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space — a signature of Bawa’s work.

Today, visitors can tour the estate with a guide, walk through Bawa’s former residence, and even stay overnight in one of the artistically restored garden suites. Lunuganga isn’t just a place to visit — it’s a space to reflect, feel, and be immersed in a story told through landscape and silence.
