Just outside Trincomalee lies a series of ancient thermal wells known as the Kanniya Hot Springs, believed to date back to the time of King Ravana, and later revered in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Local legends speak of their healing powers, and archaeological evidence suggests they were part of a historic monastery complex.
There are seven square-shaped wells, each with its own distinct temperature, arranged within a peaceful garden setting. The waters are shallow, clear, and warm — and many visitors partake in the local tradition of scooping water over their heads as a form of spiritual cleansing.
While modest in appearance, the cultural significance of Kanniya is profound, offering a glimpse into centuries-old rituals and the island’s belief in the natural world’s healing forces. It’s a tranquil stop for those seeking balance, history, and a deeper connection with the land.
