The Radiant Jewel of the Sacred City – Commanding the Anuradhapura skyline with its massive, glistening white dome, the Ruwanwelisaya is an architectural and spiritual masterpiece. Constructed in the 2nd century BCE by King Dutugemunu, this stupa enshrines relics of the Buddha and is revered as one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka.
The structure’s grand dome rests atop three circular terraces, each flanked by intricately sculpted elephant friezes—guardians that appear to emerge from the earth itself. The perfectly symmetrical form symbolizes the cosmos, while the surrounding courtyards are dotted with ancient stone inscriptions and ceremonial platforms. Illuminated at night, the stupa glows with an ethereal brilliance, creating a magical sight that leaves an indelible impression on all who witness it.
