An Ancient University of Faith and Thought – Spanning more than 200 hectares, the Abhayagiriya Monastery was once one of the largest and most influential Buddhist institutions in the ancient world. Established in the 1st century BCE, it was both a center for Theravāda and Mahāyāna thought, attracting students and pilgrims from as far as India, China, and Southeast Asia.
The focal point of the complex is the Abhayagiri Stupa, which stands at 75 meters and is surrounded by impressive remnants of meditation platforms, stone bridges, twin ponds, and intricately carved moonstones. The monastery was known for its scholastic achievements, cosmopolitan outlook, and synthesis of Buddhist traditions. Abhayagiriya is a place of both intellectual vigor and meditative stillness—a cradle of ancient wisdom hidden beneath leafy canopies and time-worn stone.
