Situated approximately 32 kilometers east of Kandy, the Victoria Reservoir stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s engineering prowess and commitment to sustainable development. Formed by the Victoria Dam, this expansive reservoir is not only the largest in the country but also plays a pivotal role in hydroelectric power generation and irrigation.
The Victoria Dam, completed in 1985, is renowned for its impressive double-curvature arch design, making it the tallest dam in Sri Lanka at 122 meters. Constructed under the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Programme, the dam was a collaborative effort with international partners and was ceremonially opened by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Its innovative design includes eight spillways and a 5,646-meter-long tunnel channeling water to a powerhouse equipped with three turbines, collectively generating 210 MW of electricity.
Visitors can experience the grandeur of this structure from the Adikaramgama Viewpoint, offering panoramic vistas of the reservoir set against the backdrop of lush hills and the Knuckles Mountain Range. The serene environment, combined with the dam’s architectural brilliance, makes it a must-visit destination for those exploring Kandy’s attractions.
