Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake)

Located at the heart of the city, Kandy Lake—also known as Bogambara Lake—is a tranquil man-made reservoir that reflects the surrounding hills, temple spires, and colonial architecture. It serves as a peaceful centerpiece to Kandy, drawing both locals and travelers seeking rest and reflection.

Historical Significance

The lake was created in 1807 by the last King of Kandy, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, as part of the royal gardens. Built by damming a portion of the Bogambara Oya, the lake originally included a decorative island at its center, said to have been used as the king’s summerhouse. The lake stands as a symbol of the Kandyan Kingdom’s last golden era before the British colonial period.

Scenic Charm & Cultural Ambience

Surrounded by shaded walkways and white-washed parapet walls with decorative cloud motifs, the lake offers postcard-perfect views, especially at sunrise and dusk. The nearby Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is beautifully reflected on its still waters, adding to the spiritual significance of the site. Though nestled in a bustling city, Kandy Lake maintains a meditative calm—making it a beloved backdrop for cultural festivals and everyday life alike.
