A Sacred Gem of Symmetry and Stonecraft, the Polonnaruwa Vatadage is one of the finest examples of ancient Sinhalese architecture. Built to enshrine a sacred relic—likely the Buddha’s tooth or alms bowl—this circular structure is enclosed by concentric rings of intricately carved stone pillars.
Four stone staircases aligned to the cardinal points lead to seated Buddha statues, while elaborate guard stones and moonstones depict mythological and symbolic motifs. The craftsmanship of the carvings, especially the lotus petal bands and dwarapala figures, reflect both religious reverence and artistic mastery. The Vatadage remains one of the most spiritually resonant and visually captivating structures in the ancient city.
